Chicken manure is the primary waste product from poultry farms. If not handled promptly,it can produce foul odors, pollute the environment, and breed harmful bacteria and parasites, causing significant trouble for farmers.Yet there’s a saying:"There’s no such thing as waste—only resources misplaced."So,how can chicken manure be transformed from waste into valuable assets?
Turning chicken manure into organic fertilizer is an option for many farmers—it’s also an economical and environmentally friendly approach that not only reduces pollution but also enhances resource efficiency. So,what are the steps and precautions to consider when converting chicken manure into organic fertilizer?
I.Collection and Pre-treatment of Chicken Manure
When collecting fresh chicken manure, impurities such as feathers and leftover feed should be removed as much as possible.Additionally, since chicken manure has a relatively high moisture content—around 70%to 80%—it’s necessary to add dry materials like straw, sawdust, rice husks,or mushroom residue to adjust the moisture level to 50%to 60%.(A helpful guideline:the mixture should form a firm clump when squeezed in your hand but easily crumble upon release.)
II.Compost Fermentation
Common composting methods:
Pile-style:Stack into long strips(1 to 1.5 meters high,2 meters wide),turning the pile regularly(1–2 times per week).
Trough/Reactor:Suitable for large-scale production, with controllable temperature and humidity.
Temperature Control:
--Warming Phase(Days 1–3):Temperatures rise to above 50°C.
--High-temperature phase(55–70°C,maintained for 7–15 days):Eliminates pathogens and weed seeds.
--Cooling Phase:After the temperature drops, turn the pile to accelerate decomposition.
III.Composting Assessment
Appearance:The color has deepened(to a dark brownish hue),and it appears loose with no odor.
Temperature:The pile temperature is close to and stable at ambient temperature.
Germination Test:You can use radish seeds for the test—any germination rate above 90%is considered合格(qualified).
4.Processing and Handling
After maturation is complete, the material can be crushed and screened to remove large particles, resulting in a more uniform fertilizer. If needed,phosphorus-rich rock powder, potash fertilizer,or other additives can be incorporated to enhance the fertilizer's effectiveness.Additionally,if a granulator is available, the fertilizer can be formed into pellets, making it easier to store, transport, and apply.
1.Storage of organic fertilizer:It should be stored in a dry, shaded area, avoiding exposure to rain or direct sunlight.
2.Environmental concerns:The fermentation process may generate ammonia and hydrogen sulfide;therefore,it is recommended to operate in a well-ventilated area.
3.Fertilization concerns:If applied directly back to the field, ensure thorough decomposition first;otherwise,it may easily burn roots or attract pests.
4.Safety and Hygiene:During the production process, workers should wear masks and gloves when handling materials to avoid direct contact with fresh chicken manure.
